30 Days of Heart: Day 19

the body can not survive without the heart!

In this post I wanted to share about Heart Attacks.  As I do, know my intention is not to make light or use this serious person-killer to promote myself.  It is something many people around the world suffer from.  I wanted to open it up to all parts of your body, and share some things we can do together to fight back.

What is a Heart attack?

According to Heart.org your heart muscle needs oxygen to survive. A heart attack occurs when the blood flow that brings oxygen to the heart muscle is severely reduced or cut off completely.  This happens because coronary arteries that supply the heart muscle with blood flow can slowly become narrow from a buildup of fat, cholesterol and other substances that together are called plaque. This slow process is known as atherosclerosis. When a plaque in a heart artery breaks, a blood clot forms around the plaque. This blood clot can block the blood flow through the heart muscle. When the heart muscle is starved for oxygen and nutrients, it is called ischemia. When damage or death of part of the heart muscle occurs as a result of ischemia, it is called a heart attack or myocardial infarction (MI). About every 40 seconds, someone in the United States has a myocardial infarction (heart attack).

why don’t we stop them?

Well, that is a tough topic.  No one says while eating a big mac or a piece of pizza, “I can’t wait till this gives me a heart attack”.  You see, it is not one unhealthy food choice that causes a heart attack to happen.  In most cases it is years upon years of one unhealthy choice after another, coupled with stressful living and a closed spirit.

Johnny, you had me until the spirit part!  I will get to that later, but first I want to talk about the physical part.  Everyone probably knows someone who has had a heart attack, or worse died from one.  I am so sorry for your loss and pray peace over you if that is the case.  It is a tough pill to swallow so to speak.  After the fact you are saying what if statements like the what ifs would have brought them back.  The best and hardest thing to do if you lost someone is WRITE DOWN all the good memories or things you have learned from that person, and celebrate them and their contribution to your life.  Then, take steps to better prepare your body for the aging process.

I know it is really hard to take care of something you can’t see.  You could be making all healthy food choices but still something on the inside could be broken without you even knowing.  This is where yearly thorough checkups can come in handy.  I had a friend who joined the military in so called perfect health.  He signed up for the special forces training.  With a week left in this training some test results came back showing that he had a hidden heart issue and if he stayed he most likely would have just died on the battlefield.  None of the normal testing up until that point showed anything.  He is alive and very successful now with an awesome family.  I am not trying to scare you or make you not follow your dreams, but am trying to share that we may not FEEL bad or unhealthy to have something brewing on the inside.

Your mind and heart are connected!

Most people I bet do not see the connection between the Heart and Mind, but after being on this journey for just one month I sure am starting to.  If your heart is hurting, then your mind will start hurting.  You may not pick up on it but you could close yourself off to others, you might start having thoughts of harm or death.  You could have several issues that you never had before.  IF THIS IS YOU THEN TODAY WRITE DOWN WHAT YOU ARE GOING THROUGH THAT’S DIFFERENT AND GO ASK A PROFESSIONAL.  IT COULD SAVE YOUR LIFE! Your mind may not tell you a diagnosis of something but it sure can start acting haywire if and when something is wrong.  I will write more on this connection in later posts but I just wanted to throw this out there for clarity.

Your spirit and heart are connected!

Have you ever felt blah after a couple of days of just binging on bad food and Netflix? It might seem that it was because you just had 4 pizzas and watched 7 seasons of your favorite show in a row, but I have seen another option.  Your spirit was created in you for activity.  It was created for adventure, and risk.  When you are on your couch binging on Netflix, You risk nothing except getting fired from your job if you didn’t go. Your Spirit, whether you realize it or not, is alive and wants to be fed just like your belly.  When you don’t feed it with something (I feed it with the bible, worship, prayer) it will become lethargic and actually can cause physical issues. When you deprive your spirit of this “oxygen” (adventure/risk) it needs or just give it fake adventure by watching someone else live adventurously on a screen, it can even cause spiritual ischemia-a symptom that if left untreated, can lead to a spiritual heart attack. It’s what cutting off essentials to a healthy heart can look like. I have more to write on this subject but wanted you to see there is actual connection between the mind, spirit, and heart as well as what we already know about the body.

it is time for our hearts to attack!

I don’t know about you but I am no longer content sitting back and waiting for life to come to me.  I am ready to take the fight to life.  I was created to do life with you, and you with me.  If we come together even with our struggles, pain, shame and everything we face, we can overcome together.  Listen, none of us know the day or the hour we will pass from this life to the next, but we do have a choice how we live or don’t live this one.  If we pump our hearts physically by working out, pump our hearts mentally but education and wisdom, and pump our hearts spiritually by God or something greater than ourselves then we will bring our whole being back into unity and overcome anything we set out to do.

This is not an “if you think it you can achieve it” crap.  Sorry that poop emoji from yesterdays blog is still in my mind. It is time to come into unity with ourselves in every area, pumped by our Heart.  Attack life today by digging deep into your heart and working on all of yourself.  It is no longer an excuse to be lethargic after reading this.  It is no longer an excuse to live isolated after reading this.  It is no longer an excuse to do nothing after reading this.  You may not have the strength on your own but our growing community does together.  We are a people from many walks of life, races, and belief systems, yet we can come together as human beings and love one another.

That is the attack plan.  We go out of our comfort zone and find people who have these symptoms and love them with our heart. Simply love them where they are.  Simply give to them in need.  You will see as you do this your body starting to re-align itself.  It will be so focused on living, that it might just save you!
