30 Days of Heart: Day 15

I am the vine, you are the branches!

I have been coming to Woodward, Ok with my wife a couple of times this last week.  It looked like a tornado had come through the city.  There where trees and branches down everywhere.  It would not be surprising for a tornado to hit Oklahoma, yet this was not one.  It was rain. It simply rained while cold and it caused widespread damage and power outages in the entire city.

I got to see the citezens come together with emergency crews, and electric co to get the city back up and running. The sense of unity was amazing in a week of division in the news! It got me to thinking of one of my favorite bible stories with Jesus.

““I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing. If you do not remain in me, you are like a branch that is thrown away and withers; such branches are picked up, thrown into the fire and burned.”
‭‭John‬ ‭15:5-6‬ ‭NIV‬‬

A lot of people would say this is a controversial passage but I think it’s great for all people to consider. Of course people of the Christian faith take it on a spiritual level and that is great to be in relationship with Jesus and one another.

Today I want to simply focus on the topic of collectiveness.  Take the tree in this picture up top.  It has many branches and parts working together, both seen and unseen.  Just like a tree the city of Woodward has many people from different jobs, faiths, political leanings and so on.  They came together in a time of what could be great crisis and had a plan before hand and not after the fact.  From the top down they were prepared.  The police, fire department, and hospital all had plans for when the power would go down.  They had plans for the ice, they had plans for each other, and they had a plan for the clean up afterwards.

My point is what is our collective plan. I know everyone makes plans(most people) but can we really fulfill a plan by ourselves.  I would say if you can fulfill a plan by yourself it is not big enough.  It will take others coming together in love and unity to make it work.  Do not be blinded by ignorance of other races, religions, and politics to keep you from working together for the good of communities, states, and nations.

We are like a tree.  There are many branches, leaves, roots, seeds, and fruit, but there is only one trunk.

In the christian faith Jesus is our Trunk that holds us all together.  We can choose to hang out with him and each other or we can be by ourselfs and produce no fruit or results.

the time is now

If you are a branch don’t be so arrogant to think you are the one that produces the fruit or result when you are simply the one that tangibly holds it simply to give it away for someone else to eat, or impart into them. Your heart matters!

If you are a leaf, don’t feel so bad that you are not a branch that you forget you are so important that you help soak up water and nutrition for the rest of the Tree.

If you are a root, don’t feel so bad you are not seen by people.  If not for you being strong and doing your part the tree would fall over and die. You are the foundation on which everything else is built.

It is simple but so hard because of our blinders to other parts of the tree. Simple because if we simply do our part and realize everyone else is important to our community too then it is win win. It is hard because we are so ingrained to not take other people or parts of the tree into consideration that we simply hang with like people that we never accomplish what is in our heart to accomplish.

Now is the time that we come together and realize we all need each other, but more importantly realize each other’s value and join the community of people. We must believe in each other, we must grow in relationship with one another by speaking to one another, and we must act today by working hand in hand to make an impact on the world around us.

I am Johnny Walker and I am on a journey to Get, Grow in, and Give my heart! Will you come with me?
